Sutton qualifies for 10km swimming

BEIJING, May 31: American Chloe Sutton, 16, secured a place in the 10km open water swimming at the Beijing Olympics when she won a women’s qualifying race on Saturday.

Only one swimmer per nation could qualify for the 10km race, which makes its Olympic debut in August. Sutton had to beat compatriot Kirsten Groome in the race at the Olympic course at the Shunyi Park which will also host the rowing and canoeing.

Italy’s Martina Grimaldi finished second in the final Olympic qualifying race. Another Italian, Alice Franco, was third and missed out on a Beijing spot.—Reuters
