Ghalia excels with four titles: Asim bags triple crown

KARACHI, May 29: International Ghalia Khursheed annexed two more titles to end the 36th Karachi Table Tennis championship on a highly promising note with a quadruple as curtain fell on the week-long competition at the Islamia Club on Thursday.

Ghalia whipped younger sister Maliha straight 11-7, 11-9, 11-8 to claim the women’s singles open crown while she teamed up with Mohsin Raza to register a 11-8, 11-9, 11-7 victory over the pair of Asim Aziz and Maliha to land the mixed doubles title.

Earlier, she helped Essa Laboratory win the women team event besides the women doubles with Maliha.

Asim Aziz excelled in the men’s category by picking up a triple crown. Asim subdued a tired looking Atta Abbas 11-5, 11-6, 11-9 to clinch the men singles open title. Earlier, the two who have learned the basics of the game at Sharfabad Club in yesteryears, pocketed the men’s doubles title by getting the better of Farrukh Kamal and Khawaja Kashif 11-8, 11-7, 11-9. Asim and Atta were also part of the Essa Laboratory team along with Mohsin Raza that won the team event crown.

Defending champion Khawaja Kashif recovered from two sets down to inflict defeat on Atta Abbas in five sets to win the men’s singles ranking title.

The scores were 12-14, 6-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-8.

The women’s singles ranking title went to Islamia Club’s Qurratul Ain who got the better of Jamia Millia School’s Abeera Ali 11-6, 9-11, 11-5, 11-4.

This was Qurratul Ain’s first domestic title. Both the finalists have already been picked by the PTTF for the national camp which is currently in progress at Quetta. The two leave for the Balochistan capital on Saturday.

The winners of men and women singles ranking as well as open events were awarded Rs20,000 apiece while the runners-up received Rs10,000 apiece. The losing semi-finalists took home Rs5,000 apiece besides the trophies and medals.

The winners, runners-up and losing finalists in boys and girls’ under-12, under-15 and under-18 received good quality rubbers for their rackets.

Men singles ranking final:

Khawaja Kashif bt Atta Abbas 12-14, 6-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-8.

Ghalia Khursheed bt Maliha Khursheed 11-7, 11-9, 11-8.

Asim Aziz bt Atta Abbas 11-5, 11-6, 11-9.
