KARACHI, May 24: Institute of Business Management (IoBM), Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Altamash Institute of Dental Medicine (AIDM), Jinnah Medical and Dental College (JMDC), Bahria (BU), Greenwich (GU), Aga Khan (AKU) and defending champions Ziauddin Medical University (ZMU), have all reached the quarter-finals of the 6th AKU Inter-university football tournament 2008 underway at the AKU Ground since May 20.

Saturday’s round matches saw AKU thrash Liaquat National 5-0 while Bahria University beat Baqai Medical University 1-0.

The first match was a one-sided affair with AKU scoring two goals in the first half and three in the second as Liaquat National, even after trying out two different players in place of their star midfielder Uzair Rehman, who was red carded on Friday and was to sit out this match, couldn’t fill the gap made by his absence. Still, their goalkeeper deserves a special pat on the back for braving the AKU boys and saving just too many sure shot goals, single-handedly.

AKU’s first goal was scored by centre midfielder Sufiyan Sial in the 10th minute when he chipped in a pass by Iraj Khan in the midfield. The second insult to injury came in the 30th minute through the solo effort of right winger Waleed Khalid Butt whose long tresses would give any girl a complex!

The third goal came in the 32nd minute through substitute striker Rafay Suphie within the first five seconds of his stepping on to the field. The fourth came in the 35th minute when striker Kaleemullah Jan converted Waleed’s cross pass and the fifth one happened in the 46th minute when Iraj Khan, who was then playing at the left winger’s position converted teammate Rafay’s missed chance.

The lone goal in the second game, the match winner for Bahria, was made in the 31st minute by their striker Ali Faizan through Taimoor Shabbir’s pass.

Sunday’s fixtures:

1st quarter-final: Ziauddin Medical University vs Greenwich University at 4.00pm.

2nd quarter-final: Jinnah Medical & Dental College vs Institute of Business Administration at 5.00pm.
