People hail Gilani’s performance: survey

ISLAMABAD, May 24: Most of the people gave favourable rating to the performance of Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani as prime minister of the country in a survey conducted by Gallup Pakistan.

The field work for the survey, according to the NGO, was carried out on May 19 and 20.

About 1,595 men and women in the four provinces were interviewed in the survey.

“Around 38 per cent gave favourable ratings to the prime minister’s performance, 41 per cent termed the performance as ‘tolerable’, 20 per cent gave unfavourable ratings while two per cent did not give a response,” said the survey.

It said a majority of the people hoped that deposed judges would be reinstated by the ruling coalition despite the fact that there were conspicuous differences between the component parties over the issue.

“Around 57 per cent people hope that the deposed judges would be reinstated against 41 per cent who see ‘no chance’ of restoration of the deposed judges.”

The survey said that 36 per cent nationals favoured the decision of resignation by PML-N federal ministers from the cabinet over the judges issue while 32 per cent opposed that decision.

The NGO also put the question of a peace deal reached by the government with the local Taliban in most parts of the NWFP.

“Around 56 per cent people endorsed the peace deals reached by the federal and provincial governments with local Taliban. While 19 per cent people opposed the notion and 26 per cent did not answer the query.”

On the question of inflation, 39 per cent people were of the view that this was a result of corrupt practices of the former government. Around 28 per cent blamed the wrong policies adopted by the former regime while 27 per cent said it was due to the lack of attention by the new government towards actual problems.—APP
