Mujtaba shines as JMDC win in AKU soccer
By Shazia Hasan
KARACHI, May 22: Jinnah Medical and Dental College (JMDC) beat Altamash Institute of Dental Medicine (AIDM) 1-0 while Institute of Business Management (IoBM) drew their match with Institute of Business Administration (IBA) 0-0 on day three of the 6th AKU Inter-university football tournament 2008, played at the AKU Ground on Thursday.
The only goal, the match winner for JMDC, came when their striker Syed Mujtaba netted the ball off a pass from right winger Yasir in the 10th minute. Mujtaba was unlucky not to have scored a hat-trick in this match as both his other attempts to score resulted in the ball hitting the goalpost.
The match had its heated moments too when JMDC’s Ibrahim Mughal and AIDM’s M. Adeel were shown red cards for breaking into a fight. Also, AIDM’s Muzamil Saeed was shown the yellow card twice — once for trying to score after the foul whistle and again for arguing with the referee which resulted in his missing the second half. The red-carded players have been suspended for the next match.
Strangely the coaches of both outfits didn’t show up for this match perhaps due to the fact that the teams have already got a walkover into the quarter-finals as a result of Dow University’s pulling out of the event at the last moment on Wednesday.
Earlier the match between IoBM and IBA remained barren for the entire two 30-minute halves.
Meanwhile match commissioner Wazir Ali has issued strict instructions to all the participating teams to appear in proper kits after AIDM’s players showed up in white, red and black shorts with some even in trousers and Bermudas, or were they capri pants?
Friday’s fixtures:
Group ‘D’: Greenwich University vs Liaquat National Medical College at 3.00pm.
Group ‘A’: Ziauddin Medical University vs Baqai Medical University at 4.00pm.
Group ‘C’: Institute of Business Management vs Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences, Jamshoro, at 5.00pm.
