US ‘reserves judgment’

WASHINGTON: The US said it would “reserve judgment” on Pakistan’s peace deal with militants in Swat and would monitor how effective it is in stopping attacks.

“We’ll see. We’ll reserve judgment on these things,” State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told a briefing hours after Pakistan announced it had agreed to pull troops out of Swat under an accord with militants.

Mr McCormack, however, advised Pakistan to “get the right mix of elements” in its fight against terrorism. Such a mix, he said, should include political and economic measures as well as the military option.
