Swimmer tests positive for banned steroid

ATHENS, May 21: Top Greek swimmer Yiannis Drymonakos, a European record-holder in the men’s 200m butterfly, on Wednesday said he was pulling out of all competition after testing positive for a banned steroid, his lawyer said.

“The athlete is withdrawing from competition and reserves the right to exercise all legal prerogatives to defend his honour,” Drymonakos’ lawyer Stavros Mavrommatis said.

“He stresses that he never knowingly took banned substances,” he added. “He is emotionally crushed, he will not be going to Beijing, and is talking about permanent retirement.”—AFP
