KARACHI, May 21: Ziauddin Medical University (ZMU) beat Bahria University (BU) 2-1 in their Group ‘A’ match in the 6th AKU Inter-university football tournament 2008 being played here at the AKU Ground on Wednesday.

ZMU’s first goal came in the 12th minute of the match when left midfielder Fahad Zubair’s hit bounced off Bahria’s goalkeeper Hamza Hafeez and ZMU’s right midfielder Hasham Salahuddin easily slotted the ball into the goal off the rebound.

The second goal for the winning outfit came in the 23rd minute when centre forward Syed Umer Mohsin’s shot from the far right corner went straight into the goal.

The under-pressure Bahria boys focused totally on their defense from then onwards. Although they successfully cleared the ball in their half on several occasions, they couldn’t get the required support from their teammates on the other side.

Still they were lucky to score once. Bahria’s lone goal came in the 29th minute when their midfielder Ali Faizan converted a pass by the other midfielder Qamar-uz-Zaman.

The score was 2-1 at halftime and it remained so despite several substitutions made by both sides in the second half.

The day’s other match, a Group ‘B’ affair to be played between Jinnah Medical & Dental College and Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) was cancelled when match commissioner Wazir Ali received a call from DUHS during the final moments of the first match, informing him that the university was pulling out of the tournament due to non availability of players.

As a result the two other teams in the group, namely Jinnah Medical and Dental College and Altamash Institute of Dental Medicine got a direct walkover into the quarter-finals.

Thursday’s fixtures:

Group ‘C’: Institute of Business Management vs Institute of Business Administration at 4.00pm.

Group ‘B’: Jinnah Medical and Dental College vs Altamash Institute of Dental Medicine at 5.00pm.
