OKARA, May 20: Mian Khurram Jehangir, a son of former chief minister Manzoor Wattoo, on Tuesday resigned from the Deepalpur tehsil nazim’s office to contest the election in NA-147.The seat was vacated by Manzoor Wattoo, an MNA who has recently been appointed adviser to the prime minister.
The Wattoo senior had won the Feb 18 general election on two constituencies – NA-146 and NA-147 Okara-V (Deepalpur). He has now vacated the latter seat to let his son Khurram Jehangir to contest the bypoll.
At a press conference, Khurram resigned from the tehsil nazim’s slot and also announced parting company with the PML-Q. Although he did not say which party he would join, it was already apparent that Mian Manzoor Wattoo wished to see his son a PPP man after he himself had joined the federal government. Khurram is likely to contest the bypoll from the PPP ticket.
Manzoor Wattoo wants his son to join the PPP in the presence of PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari.
At the press conference, Khurram Wattoo also said his brother Moazzam Jehanzeb Wattoo and uncle Mian Ahmad Shujah too had withdrawn their papers filed for NA-147. As the stage is set for Khurram to be elected an MNA from the PPP, all five MNAs in Okara would be the ruling party’s men.
