APDM to convene ‘national conference’

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, May 19: The All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) has decided to convene a national conference on June 1 to work out a plan for achieving the objectives of restoration of the pre-Nov 3 judiciary, getting rid of President Pervez Musharraf and restoration of the Constitution to its Oct 12, 1999, position.

The decision was taken by a committee headed by Liaquat Baloch of Jamaat-i-Islami. The committee was formed by the first regular meeting of the APDM on May 14.

Mr Baloch said that apart from parties in the APDM, representatives of lawyers, intellectuals, labour leaders, students, journalists and civil society would be invited to the conference.

He said the conference was being held to put pressure on the government to fulfil its promise of reinstating the deposed judges and impeaching the president.

He said a tentative date of June 1 had been set for the conference but it could be changed by three or four days.

When asked if the PML-N would also be invited to the conference, Mr Baloch said: “Despite their withdrawal from the cabinet they were part of the ruling coalition and as responsible as the PPP for the failure of reinstating the deposed judges.”

However, he said that an invitation could be extended to the PML-N if the APDM leadership so desired. The committee’s meeting was attended by Akram Shah of the PMAP, Abidur Rahman of JUP, Mr Shahid of Labour Party and Sardar Azhar Farooq of Tehrik-i-Istiqlal.
