KARACHI: Cellphone robbers kill trader

KARACHI, May 16: A young man was killed in Orangi Town on Friday when he offered resistance to armed bandits who were trying to snatch his cellphone.

Police said that two armed suspects entered a cellphone shop in Orangi and upon facing resistance opened fire on Pervez Alam, 28. The victim and his younger brother were injured in the incident. Both were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where Pervez Alam was pronounced dead on arrival. However, his younger brother was admitted to the hospital for medical attention.

An FIR has been registered against unknown suspects on the complaint of the victim’s third brother. In another incident, in Lyari unknown armed suspects shot dead a young man on Slaughter Yard Road in the limits of Baghdadi police station.

The identity of the deceased could not be established till the filing of this report. The body of the young man was shifted to the Civil Hospital for legal formalities.

Injured

A professor was shot at by unknown persons in his house on Friday morning. The incident occurred at the Jamia Millia campus in the limits of Al Falah police station.

A duty officer of the police station said that ‘15’ received the information about the incident at 7.10am. The victim, Prof Munir Arain, was taken to the Jinnah Hospital where he was operated upon. Police ruled out that the incident was an act of robbery saying that no valuables had been taken away from the house.

The duty officer said that the family members of the injured professor had not yet revealed full details of the incident.

Meanwhile, condemning the attack on Prof Arain the Sindh Professors and Lecturers’ Association has urged the government to immediately arrest the culprits.Expressing its concern over the deteriorating law and order, an emergent meeting of the SPLA was held with Prof Riaz Ahsan in the chair. The meeting deplored that despite being a grade 19 teacher, Associate Professor Muneer Arian had been admitted to a general ward of the JPMC.
