WASHINGTON, May 12: The United States pledged on Monday to do whatever it can to ensure the success of democracy in Pakistan.

A State Department official, while commenting on PML-N’s decision to quit the cabinet, noted that a “withdrawal from the cabinet does not constitute a withdrawal from the government as well.” Confirming Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher’s meetings with Nawaz Sharif and Asif Zardari in London on Sunday, the official said: “We will do all we can to ensure the success of civilian democracy in Pakistan.”—Correspondent
