Tank-Wana road blocked

Published May 9, 2008

TANK, May 8: Security forces closed the Tank-Wana road on Thursday and stopped people from entering South Waziristan amid fresh tensions in the volatile tribal area.

Sources said that the main highway had been blocked at Kurr checkpost near Tank and local people were not allowed to leave or enter the area.

The highway has been blocked at a time when the government is using tribal interlocutors to renew contacts with Taliban commander Baitullah Mehsud for resumption of peace talks.

In a related development, supporters of pro-government militant commander Maulvi Nazir have started digging bunkers in areas adjacent to the Mehsud territory.—Correspondent
