KARACHI, May 5: The Board of Intermediate Education, Karachi, (BIEK) has sought imposition of Section 144 at educational institutions to ban entry of unconcerned people at the examination centres being set up in connection with the Intermediate annual examinations, beginning on May 13.

BIEK chairman Prof Anwar Ahmed Zai told Dawn on Monday that the board had written letters to the home department, the city Nazim, the CCOP and town police officers, requesting them to take measures to facilitate the holding of examinations in a peaceful atmosphere.

He said around 200,000 candidates were appearing in the HSC Part-I and II (science, home economics, commerce and humanities) annual examinations, and 208 centres had been set up at government colleges and higher secondary schools.

The BIEK has also requested that business relating to photostat in the vicinity of examination centres should also remain suspended during examination timings.

About setting up of vigilance committees, BIE officials said the entire process of setting up of such committees would be completed by May 10.

SCIENCE GROUP: HSC Part-I and II (pre-engineering, pre-medical) and general science (computer) and home economics group annual examinations-2008 would begin on May 13 on alternate days between 9 am and 12 noon at 89 centers.

COMMERCE: HSC Part-I and II (Commerce) group annual exams for both regular and private candidates would commence on May 17 on alternate days between 2pm and 5pm.

In all, 72,133 candidates have registered themselves for the examination, and 78 centers have been set up.

HUMANITIES: HSC humanities group annual examination would be held in the second phase of the examinations, scheduled to start from June 10. In all, 36,126 candidates have registered themselves for the exam.
