KARACHI: Hearing of Afaq’s bail plea adjourned

KARACHI, May 5: Additional District and Sessions Judge (East) Abdul Razaq on Monday adjourned the hearing of the bail plea of Mohajir Qaumi Movement chief Afaq Ahmed in a kidnapping-cum-murder case till May 6.

The judge directed the prosecution to produce the police file on Tuesday.

Afaq Ahmed and Amir Khan, along with their associates, were charged with the kidnapping of Muttahida Qaumi Movement workers Mohammed Farooq, Mohammad Tahir, Salman and Anwar in Landhi on June 19, 1992. Later, they allegedly killed Mohammad Farooq.

The police registered a case (FIR No102/92) under Sections 147, 148, 149, 324, 364, 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of Ismail Quershi.

Defence counsel Suhail Anjum stated in his application that the applicant was innocent as the case had been registered on political grounds, and that the accused be granted bail.

Notice issued

Civil Judge and Judical Magistrate (Central) Sohail Ahmed issued a notice to SSP Investigation (West) on Monday, asking him to direct the investigation officer to submit a charge-sheet till May 16 in a case against three policemen who had allegedly opened fire on two motorcyclists.

According to the prosecution, constables Mohammad Imran, Arif Hussain and Salman Farsi had allegedly opened fire on Zubair Khan and Mohammad Sqib on March 21 near Sakhi Hassan. The injured were rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where Zubair succumbed to his injuries while Saqib sustained serious injuries.

Earlier, the court issued a number of show-cause notices to the investigation officer and also directed the SSP concerned to ask the IO to submit a charge-sheet, but he failed to comply with the court orders.

An FIR was registered against the policemen under Sections 302, 324/34 of the PPC at the Taimuria Police Station.

Illegal weapons case

Civil Judge and Judical Magistrate (East) Asim Saeed Lodhi awarded one year imprisonment to an accused on Monday after he was found guilty of possessing illegal weapons.

The prosecution stated that Zafar Ali was arrested at a bus stop in Korangi on Nov 9, 2006, due to his suspicious movement and an unlicensed TT pistol was recovered from him.

A case (FIR 217/06) was registered against Zafar under Section 13-D of the Arms Ordinance at the Zaman Town Police Station.

Charge-sheet sought

Judical Magistrate (East) Pervez Qadir Memon directed the investigation officer on Monday to submit a charge-sheet in a case pertaining to the murder of a retired professor of Karachi University.

The body of Prof Dr Zeba Zakia, 75, was found in bushes on Jan 29 in the jurisdiction of Sachal Police Station, according to the prosecution.

The deceased was unmarried and used to live alone in her Gulshan-i-Iqbal residence.

The police had booked deceased’s driver Saleem alias Shabbir, her maid Khalida and Munir Abbassi, and a case was registered under Section 302/34 of PPC at the Sachal Police Station.
