Hopes for Pakistan’s return to C’wealth

KUALA LUMPUR, April 30: Malaysia on Wednesday expressed optimism that Pakistan’s suspension from the Commonwealth would be lifted, saying the country had made progress towards returning to democracy.

Malaysian Foreign Minister Rais Yatim, who is acting chairman of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group which is monitoring the issue, said Pakistan had made requested changes to its judiciary and legislation.

He is due to meet Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma in London next week to make his recommendations.

“The Commonwealth secretariat is in fact eager to have the latest feedback on the restructuring of the country in terms of judiciary, legislation as well as tenets of democracy,” Rais said.—AFP
