Bright Flame favourite to bag Spring Cup at LRC

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, April 12: Three-year-old filly Bright Flame, who belongs to the bloodline of speedy horses looks like a better proposition to win the Spring Cup to be gone over the 1,200 metres distance during the 33rd Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

The filly from Cry For The Clown, after winning a race, was placed second on her previous outing and even at that performance she can have the better of her nine rivals.

The mare Don’t Follow and the horse Byron would also be fighting for places in this fifth race of the day.

In the supporting event, the English mare Grecianette should be all set to win the Neelum Plate, a class I, II and III combined handicap race to be contested over the sprinting distance of 1,000 metres. The event is to be contested by five English thoroughbreds and a Pakistani half-bred colt. Of the three in contention, namely Grecianette, Konica and Alina Alisha, the first two belong to one owner.

Grecianette is better in class. But what her owner is up to will be seen at the course. Alina Alisha is capable of upsetting all calculations too but it is the rider who would matter the most in this fourth race of the day.

The Hyderabad Plate, class IV, division I, II and III combined over 1,200 metres has nine runners. Of them three, Lovely Dunit, Hallow Handsome and Lucky Cat, look on chance. It should be a closely contested race. Although Lovely Dunit has been promoted on top in the handicap, being the speedier filly, she still has an edge over the others.

As far as speed is concerned, four-year-old chestnut colt Big Power, who showed his mettle by winning his previous run, is a cut above the rest. He will be going all out to make it a two-in-a-row. Noor-un-Nisa and Gold Round look good for bagging places too in the second race of the day.

Gold Mine, Murad King and Eve are the pick of the 14 runners fielded for the third race, the Multan Plate, class VI, division I and II over the sprinting distance of 1,000 metres. They should be finishing in the same order.

In all, 78 runners are to compete in the seven races, barring last-minute withdrawals. The four races will be held over 1,000 metres and three over 1,200 metres. The first race will commence at 12.30pm.
