IHC seeks report on Indian dams
ISLAMABAD, April 5: The Islamabad High Court on Saturday directed the secretary, Cabinet Division to submit a report on construction of dams by India.
IHC Chief Justice Sardar Mohammad Aslam was hearing a writ petition filed by Kowkab Iqbal advocate.
The petitioner had raised concerns over the construction of Baglihar dam, Kishan Ganga Dam and other 62 proposed dams by the Indian government.
He said that India was using about 80 per cent of water in river Jhehlum and Chenab, creating a barren-like situation in Pakistan.
He contended that it was a blatant violation of Indus Basin Treaty.
“Under Article 9 of the Constitution, a citizen has been vested with the rights to raise his or her voice over the issues causing direct impact upon his or her interests, which was also upheld by the Supreme Court of Pakistan in 1994,” he added.
The petitioner said that in the past the matter had been given a cold shoulder by the successive governments and politicians.
It is a matter of life and death for Pakistanis and the government should raise the issue at the International Court of Justice to get relief, the petitioner said.
The Chief Justice, after hearing his arguments, directed the Government and ministry concerned to file para-wise comments.
The same single-judge bench dismissed the plea of a head constable Mohammad Yaqub about his promotion directing him to take his case to the Federal Service Tribunal.
