Ammunition shortage for Indian shooters

NEW DELHI, March 28: India’s shooting association has threatened to boycott the Beijing Olympics if a dispute over supply of ammunition for training is not resolved.

Secretary of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) Baljit Sethi said on Friday that an ammunition shortage was hindering training of shooters who are considered India’s best hopes of winning an Olympic medal this year.

The federal sports ministry used to supply ammunition to the shooting association until recently, but has now directed the NRAI to import it directly.

India’s lone medal — a silver at the 2004 Olympics — came through trap shooter Rajyavardhan Rathore, who again features among the medal aspirants for Beijing.
