GUJRANWALA, March 27: Over 100 opposition members walked out of the district council session on Thursday for not constructing city roads and executing other uplift projects.

The union council nazims protested against the treasury members and the district nazim of the PML-Q for neglecting development of the area.

Reports said a district council meeting was convened at a local marriage hall with district naib nazim Jamal Hasan Manj in the chair. As soon as the meeting started, opposition leaders Taufi Ahmad Butt and Hamza Butt of the PML-N and Afzal Mehr, brother of former district nazim Haji Gohar Zaman, started criticising District Nazim Fiaz Ahmad Chattha for not completing uplift projects despite announcement of a development package by President Pervez Musharraf and former Punjab chief minister

Pervaiz Elahi during their speeches in Gujranwala a year ago.

They alleged that the ruling party embezzled all allocations. They walked out of the meeting along with more than 100 UC nazims, including women members, while some treasury members also supported them. The district nazim was not present in the meeting. They said all resolutions which were passed in different sessions could not be implemented.

Later, district naib nazim Jamal Hassan Manj adjourned the meeting till an indefinite period. The opposition hinted that no confidence motion would be moved against the district nazim soon.
