Govt request needed for UN probe: Ban

By Our Correspondent

UNITED NATIONS, March 26: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon assured Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday that the world body would make a decision on setting up a commission to probe the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto after it received a formal request from Pakistan.

Mr Ban called Mr Gilani to congratulate him on his election, UN chief’s spokesperson Michelle Montas said.

She said Mr Ban told Mr Gilani that action would be initiated after the UN received a request.

She said after the secretary general received the request he would forward it to the UNSC president and it would be up to the Security Council to authorise such an investigation.
