KARACHI: Traffic jams on Hawkesbay Road a daily occurrence

KARACHI, March 24: Traffic jams on the main Hawkesbay Road in Keamari Town have become a daily occurrence particularly in the evening rush hours due to illegal parking by transporters.
Although the transporters have been provided parking facility at the new truck stand, they continue to park many of their heavy vehicles, including trailers, on the service road running parallel to Hawkesbay Road. The presence of a large number of stationary vehicles almost all the day creates traffic congestion and prolonged jams off and on.
The new truck stand, made functional in the ’90s, was especially designed to provide loading/unloading facilities to more than 150 transport companies. The aim was to reduce the pressure of heavy traffic on Mauripur Road, Hawkesbay Road and other arteries linking the area with the old city areas.
However, the objective could not be achieved as the transporters continued to park their vehicles close to their place of business in violation of relevant traffic rules.
Besides, the transporters have demolished the boundary wall of the track stand to facilitate maintenance of their vehicles at the illegally set up workshops along the service road, only to add to the traffic mess.
