JOHANNESBURG, March 17: Former South African captain Hansie Cronje, who was banned from cricket after pleading guilty to match-fixing charges, will not be posthumously inducted in to S. Africa’s Sports Hall of Fame.
Naas Botha, a former Rugby Union player and the head of the Sports Fall of Fame, said the principle was obvious.
“The bottom line is that whoever is inducted cannot cast any shadow of doubt on his sport whatsoever and cannot have brought the sport into disrepute,” Botha told Sondag newspaper. “So unfortunately Hansie would not be eligible.”
Basil D’Oliviera, Graeme Pollock and Barry Richards are some of the cricketers who have been included in the Hall of Fame.
