HYDERABAD: SDF points out faults in uplift schemes

Bureau Report

HYDERABAD, March 17: A delegation of Sindh Democratic Forum pointed out faults in the schemes for roads and flyovers being carried out by the district government under the Hyderabad Development Package in a meeting with district nazim on Monday.

The delegation comprising forum convener Abrar Kazi, secretary Zulfiqar Halepoto, M Ibrahim Joyo, Agha Shahabuddin, Nazir Memon, Aslam Baloch and Iqbal Mallah urged the nazim to reverse certain development schemes if it was found schemes were technically wrong.

Three overhead bridges at Shahbaz Building Chowk, Latif Chowk and Giddo Chowk were a case in point. The flyovers at Shahbaz and Latif Chowks were meant for smoothing traffic flow between Hyderabad bypass and Fateh Chowk through Wadhu Wah and Latifabad No.7. Therefore, it was logical that the bridges should connect Wadhu Wah to Wadhu Wah roads over Latif and Shahbaz Chowks which was not the cae, the delegation remarked.

The bridges, which would be emerging from the Shahbaz building and go to Rani Bagh would be 900-foot long and would create a hump on the Thandi Sarak and the National Highway, destroying the beauty of the two main roads of the city, it argued.

The members of the delegation said that the third overhead bridge at Giddu Chowk, which was meant to ease traffic flow between Latifabad and Kotri was also unnecessary as the route had been bereft of any traffic, which was not expected to build up at all unless a new bridge on the Indus was constructed in place of the existing one.

They drew the nazim’s attention to the condition of roads, water supply, sewerage problems and encroachment with especial emphasis on the pathetic situation in Tando Agha, Tando Mir Mehmood, Bhatti Goth, Tando Yousuf, Jani Shah Jo Paro, Talab No.3, Tando Wali Mohammad, Site area, Hur Camp, Qasimabad and stressed the need for an overhead bridge between Phulelli and Tando Yousuf.

A spokesman for SDF said that the nazim promised to reverse the decisions even if it cost additional expenditure, provided that it was proved that the concerns of the SDF and citizens of Hyderabad were genuine.

He briefed the delegation about various developmental schemes being implemented by the district government and invited the forum to hear a technical briefing on the overall Hyderabad Development Package.

He said that the district government would appreciate coordination between the citizens and the district government.

JUP: The senior vice-president of Jamiat Ulema-i-Pakistan (JUP) Sahibzada Abul Khair Muhammad Zubair on Monday demanded strict action against what he termed “Gunda Raj” at the Hala Naka bus terminal and encroachments on footpaths.

In a statement faxed to Dawn, He said that undesirable elements had control over the Hala Naka bus terminal and the police and the district administration appeared helpless before them.

He said that a large plot was lying vacant at the bus terminal but the thugs allow bus driver to park their vehicles alongside the road after taking extortion money, which disrupted traffic on the National Highway.

He said that the footpaths on both sides of the road were also occupied by encroachers and called upon the district government and the city taluka administration to order that the vehicles be parked in the open space or make arrangements for shifting the bus terminal out of the city.
