SANGHAR: It takes 2 to buy flour

Published March 15, 2008

SANGHAR, March 14: Rangers have been deployed to monitor distribution of flour at mills and stores, misuses of quota, and black marketing.

An interesting situation arose when Rangers restricted 20kg flour per person while there were packs of 40kg. People queued at mills since early morning were told by Rangers to arrange a co-buyer and distribute half between the two.

Manglio Bheel told Dawn that he was in queue outside the Jhol Flour Mills and when his chance came he was told to come next day as the stock was exhausted. Next day had more in store as unaware of 20-20kg rule he had to return in search of co-buyer and upon succeeding in getting one, it was past noon and the mills gate was already closed. Unable to bear humiliation of third failure at the hands of his family, the poor soul went in search of flour some kilometres distance and could get his hands on few kilograms only.

Now the biggest problem for him was to find co-buyer as few people could afford to buy 20kg, which was a bulk of quantity for them. They refused saying: “We are not as rich as you to buy such a huge quantity.”

The vicious cycle left him short of money as during the run-and-find-a-partner exercise, the poor guy had spent few bucks on some pressing needs and was left with no other choice but to buy few kilograms only.
