BADIN: Backward areas denied development funds

By Our Correspondent

BADIN, March 14: The local bodies’ performance in Badin district has disappointed people who complained that these institutions had failed to develop backward areas. They say that at the time of promulgation of the local government ordinance, it was claimed that the new system would bring about an overall improvement particularly in rural areas. However, all hopes in this regard have been dashed.

The Citizen Community Boards (CCBs), which were given task to prepare development projects, also did not achieve the expected results.

Members of the boards said that the district nazim was not willing to release the due share in development funds to these boards on one or the other pretext.

They said that many of the community boards had deposited required community share for the schemes but whenever they visit offices of the authorities for release of funds, they were turned back by officials on some excuse.

In all, 501 boards have been registered with the social welfare department in the district. To streamline the procedure, the district government had constituted a committee and opened the one-window operation and a launching ceremony was held a few months ago.

As many as 39 boards submitted their schemes through one-window operation for release of funds, but except one all were rejected by the district government, said the board members.

The members said they were expected to play an important role in bringing neglected areas at par with the developed ones but they could do nothing if the funds were not allocated.Meanwhile, the staff of the one-window CCB Badin alleged that they were not being paid salaries for the last four months.
