Lebanon vote put off for 16th time

BEIRUT, March 10: A parliamentary session to elect Lebanon’s president has been postponed from Tuesday to March 25 amid continued deadlock between rival political leaders, the speaker’s office announced on Monday.

“Parliament speaker Nabih Berri has decided to postpone the session to Tuesday, March 25 at noon (1000 GMT),” his spokesman Ali Hamdan said.

The decision marks the 16th time since September that a parliament session to elect a successor to pro-Syrian head of state Emile Lahoud has failed amid a standoff between the western-backed government and the Hezbollah-led opposition, backed by Syria and Iran.—AFP
