LAHORE, March 9: Fancied three-year-old bay filly Heaven’s Heart easily landed the Mohyuddin Mohammad Aurangzeb Alamgir Cup run over a 1,300 metres distance during the 28th Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.
Owned by M.V. Malik and trained by Haji Fazal Hadi, Heaven’s Heart, the filly from Tripple Eight out-of-Pink Bouquet, was partnered by jockey Faisal Tahir to a nine-length’s victory over the colt Houstan, ridden by jockey Aamir Pervez. The gelding Volcano and red-roan colt Emperor completed the frame among the 13 contestants in the feature and fourth event, a class five division I handicap race.
Heaven’s Heart scored her second successive win, showing a vast improvement in performance since her first win on March 2.
A race earlier, five-year-old horse Byron, won the Mohyuddin Mohammad Aurangzeb Alamgir Plate, a class V division III handicap race, run over the distance of 1,300 metres. It was rather unusual to watch Byron, who has always been a slow beginner, take a flying start to end the race in the same manner, beating bay mare Alishba by over two lengths. The mare Shah Pari and Little Smile completed the board.Only two favourites – Byron and Heaven’s Heart – obliged the punters in a card of six events.
The punters began the day on a wrong note when the three-to-one chance dark bay mare Devine Jury prevailed over Cleopatra in the opener. The odds-on favourite Creek Cat finished third.
In the second race, long shot bay horse Rough Tough upset all calculations to win the event. He beat Love Minister by about three lengths. Stride To Moment and Zoaq completed the frame among the seven runners. The even-money favourite Jan-e-Bhakkar finished off the board.
Apex, another long shot bay colt, stunned race goers by putting up a fine performance to bag the fifth race. He beat the bay filly Spiritual Song by about two lengths. The favourite bay filly Great Memories finished third. In all, 11 runners contested in the event gone over the sprinting distance of 1,000 metres.
A rank outsider, the bay filly Jo Jo Gift won the sixth and last race to give the losing punters a parting shock. The filly owned by Khawaja M. Atif beat bay filly Can Can Girl by a length. The favourite colt Zubair Prince fought a losing battle with both before bowing out to third position in the closely contested race.
