KARACHI: 1,159 engineers get degrees: 16th NED convocation
KARACHI, March 6: As many as 1,159 students of the bachelors and masters programmes of the session 2003-04 were conferred degrees at the 16th convocation of the NED University of Engineering and Technology on Thursday.
Initially, Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan was scheduled to preside over the ceremony; however, due to his meeting with President Pervez Musharraf in Islamabad, he could not make it to the convocation. In his absence, the vice-chancellor of the NED varsity, Engineer Abul Kalam, presided over the event.
The convocation was attended by a large number of graduating students, their parents, city notables and educationists. Around 768 students received their bachelors and masters’ degrees in person.
Renowned columnist Ardeshir Cowasjee gave gold medals and merit certificates to Mohammad Asad Khan (Civil), Tayyabah Zafar (Urban Planning), Syed Mohammad Farrukh Hamza (Mechanical), Abdus Samad Hussain Siddiqui (Electrical), Riffat Anees (Computer Systems), Urooj Zehra (Textile), Rajesh Kumar (Electronics), Syed Khurshand Iqbal (Industrial), Nazia Shahzad (Telecommunications), Meer Sadaf Naeem (BCIT) and Sanaa Yusuf (Architecture).
Those who received merit certificates include Shumaila Naeem and Nausheen Hira (Civil), Mohammad Uzair Shamsi and Samia Enayat (Urban), Muslim and Junaid Hamid (Mechanical), Mohammad Laiq Ahmed and Hafiz Razaul Haq (Electrical), Ahmad Minhas and Murk Gopi Chand (Computer Science), Fauzia Khatri and Mohammad Owais Raza Siddiqui (Textile), Sonia Zia and Umair Bin Waheed (Electronics), Syed Zia Abbas Rizvi and Asif Hasan (Industrial), Nida Warsi and Aqeela Tayyab Ali (Telecommunications), Maryam Masood and Sana Chughtai (BCIT) and Saad Gadit and Faria Arouj (Architecture).
The vice-chancellor, Abul Kalam, lauding the research work being carried out at the various departments of the varsity, said this year the faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture had taken the lead in producing world-class research work.
He said that the university was carrying out three HEC-cum-USAID projects financed by the National Science Foundation of the USA, which included structural retrofitting of buildings in earthquake-prone zones; review and improvement of construction management methods in Pakistan and preparation of transportation model for Karachi.
The total grant for these projects was $1.319 million, he said.
Besides, two studies had also been carried out by the dean and the chairman of the civil engineering department on faculty development in postgraduate research for sustainable infrastructure and CPS study of India -Eurasia convergence zone, respectively, he said.
Mr Kalam said this department was also a sub-office of the Unesco for Architectural Restoration and entrusted by the government of Sindh with the responsibility for surveying, photographing, recording and tabulating data about all buildings declared heritage of the city, he added.—PPI
