RAWALPINDI, March 5: The local police on Wednesday registered a case against two staffers — a senior clerk and an assistant sub-inspector — on embezzlement charges, officials said.

The accused nominated in the FIR registered with the Civil Lines police are yet to be arrested, the officials said on condition of anonymity.

Ms Naseem, the widow of sub-inspector (SI) Fazal Dad, had lodged a complaint with the police high-ups on March 13, 2007, shortly after the death of her husband, claiming that the SI did not receive his salary for six months.

The deceased was among the Prime Minister’s House security staff Rawalpindi when he reportedly became a victim of a senior clerk, Mushtaq Afzal, and his accomplice, Muharrar ASI Manzoor Ahmad, who withdrew his six months’ salary but did not give it to him.

Following the complaint, Deputy Superintendent of Police (PM House) Liaquat Shah ordered an inquiry which found the two police employees guilty.

The inquiry report was forwarded to City Police Officer (CPO) Saud Aziz, who ordered the registration of a case against the two on embezzlement charges. Mushtaq Afzal, one of the accused, has been associated with Regional Police Office (RPO) III, Rawalpindi.

When RPO DIG Nasir Khan Durrani was contacted, he said: “Mr Afzal is attached for pay purposes but he does not have a posting at his office.”

A senior police official revealed that another top-level inquiry into a huge loss to the exchequer was also lying with the senior police officials of Rawalpindi.— Staff Reporter
