Qazi warns parties of ‘mob justice’

By Our Staff Reporter

LAHORE, March 5: Jamaat-i-Islami amir Qazi Husain Ahmad has warned the government in-waiting that if it backed out of its promises on revoking the actions taken under the emergency, the masses will themselves step forward to decide the issue.

Talking to the media after a meeting of the party leaders here on Wednesday, he said the coming government should review the policies of its predecessors which were resulting in chaos and turmoil in the country.

He said the JI would not create trouble for the new government and would give it time to fulfill its promises.

Critical of elected representatives visiting the US ambassador, Qazi Husain said their attitude was against national dignity and it was tantamount to inviting foreign interference in internal affairs.

Supporting the "black-flag" week announced by the lawyers, he said Jamaat activists would join the protest.

Appealing to all segments of society for joining the movement for restoration of the pre-emergency judiciary, he demanded immediate reinstatement of deposed chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry.

Replying to a question about the future of the six-party religious alliance, MMA, which he heads, he said it must remain intact for creating harmony among various schools of thought.

He said MMA’s political character could also be reinstated provided its components pledged to do politics of principles and not of expediency.

The Jamaat had earlier developed differences with other MMA components, mainly the JUI faction of Maulana Fazlur Rehman, over resigning from the past assemblies and taking part in Feb 18 polls.

Expressing his concern at the deteriorating health of Dr AQ Khan, Qazi Husain regretted that the national hero was under house arrest for the last four years while he was also not being provided proper medical care.

He demanded that Dr Khan should be elected as the head of the state.
