KARACHI, March 2: Water gushing out from a 24-inch-dia pipeline, which had burst a few days back, entered a number of houses in the Azam Nagar locality of Liaquatabad Town on Sunday.

Water from the flowing pipeline had also flooded the street, causing immense hardship to the area residents and inconvenience to the passers-by.

Residents of the affected locality told Dawn that they had been spending sleepless nights since the pipeline burst. Knee-deep water standing in their houses had also damaged their furniture and fixtures, they said.

When the zonal chief engineer of Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, Mohammad Arif, was contacted to know about the pipeline’s repair on Sunday evening, he said that work aimed at plugging the pipeline had been initiated on an urgent basis.

However, he said that despite suspending the supply from the water trunk to the ruptured pipeline, water running out from the line had not stopped so far.

He also pointed out that the pipeline was underneath the affected houses. He said once the water flow came to a halt, the leakages would be located and plugged within the next four hours.
