KARACHI: Tribunal reissues summons against PPP men

By Azfar-ul-Ashfaque

KARACHI, March 1: The Karsaz inquiry tribunal again issued on Saturday a warrant for the arrest of the driver of the float that carried former prime minister Benazir Bhutto upon her homecoming on Oct 18 and adjourned the hearing till March 3.

The tribunal headed by retired Justice Dr Ghous Mohammad also summoned the provincial chief of the Pakistan People’s Party, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, for March 10 to record his evidence.

Mr Shah and float driver Abdul Ghani Baloch were earlier summoned by the tribunal for Saturday but they did not turn up.

The Khairpur police station SHO appeared before the tribunal and stated that he had gone to PPP leader Mr Shah’s residence to serve the summons but he was told that Mr Shah was in Karachi due to his political engagements.

Bahadurabad police officials also visited the float driver’s home to serve the notice, but his family informed the police that Mr Baloch’s whereabouts were not known to them.

Justice Ghous directed the tribunal’s registrar, Zahoor Ahmed Hakro, to repeat the process for Mr Shah for March 10 and issue a bailable warrant in a sum of Rs5,000 for the float driver’s arrest because he had already been served a notice but was reluctant to attend proceedings.

The tribunal also ordered the police to repeat the process for Mr Shah at his residences in Karachi and Khairpur and to secure the attendance of the float driver on March 10.

The hearing was adjourned till Monday for examining PPP leader Naheed Khan.
