EC rejects Shujaat’s plea

By Iftikhar A. Khan

ISLAMABAD, Feb 29: The Election Commission rejected on Friday the Pakistan Muslim League-Q’s plea on ‘electoral anomalies’.

PML-Q president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain had called on the Chief Election Commissioner Qazi Mohammad Farooq and urged him to quickly redress complaints of PML candidates regarding alleged irregularities in the polls.

He told the commissioner that his party candidates had reservations over their opponents’ success, especially in Sindh.

He said that his party had accepted the poll results with an open heart. However, he expressed concern over the alleged irregularities during the counting and recounting process.

Chaudhry Shujaat requested the commissioner to ensure early disposal of complaints lodged by its candidates.

The commissioner told the PML-Q chief that various candidates of his party had approached the courts and the Election Commission would implement its verdicts in letter and spirit, official sources told Dawn.

He was also informed that election tribunals had been set up in all four provinces of the country and the contesting candidates could approach the concerned tribunals for their election-related grievances within forty five days of the announcement of the poll results. The tribunals would decide the cases within four months.

APP adds: The Election Commission would meet on Saturday to decide on issuance of notification for the members-elect for national and provincial assemblies.

The Election Commission secretary Kanwar Mohammad Dilshad said: “We are going to do it at the earliest. The commission would not delay notification anymore for those fulfilling the requirements.”
