Pakistan register wins

GUANGZHOU (China), Feb 28: Pakistan women’s team on Wednesday continued to perform well in the World Team Table Tennis Championships, winning two more matches to maintain their unbeaten record, while the men’s team also stunned Chile at the global event.

Placed in the 4th division of group ‘M’, the Pakistan females, in the first stage, carved a 3-0 victory against Tanzania in the morning session and then recorded a 3-0 triumph against Iceland later in the day.

In the first match of the day, Ghalia Khursheed won 11-2, 11-3, 11-9 against Tanzania’s Ngodoko Agnees Wiro. In the second game Sadia Falaksher, after going down 12-14 in the first set, won the remaining three sets 11-5, 11-9 and 11-2 against Mbayi Rose K. Maliha Khursheed handed defeat to Mohammad Mwamuta 10-12, 8-11, 11-7, and 7-11.

Pakistan women’s second match against Iceland turned out to be almost a one-sided affair. Except for the opening game played between Ghalia Khursheed and Sigurdardottir Ragnh, who played well, no other player could resist Pakistan females.

Ghalia won 8-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-4, while Sadia triumphed against Bjornsdottir Gudrun 11-5, 11-4, 11-9. In the last game Maliha defeated Sigurdarottir Fridur Run 11-3, 11-9, 11-7.

Meanwhile, Pakistan men’s team recorded their first win in the Championships as they surprised Chile 3-2.—APP
