PFMA foresees another flour crisis

Published February 24, 2008

LAHORE, Feb 23: The Pakistan Flour Mills Association has expressed fear that there may be another flour crisis due to 20 to 25 per cent cut in wheat quota for flour mills by the Federal Food Committee.

PFMA Punjab Branch chairman Habibur Rehman Khan and vice-chairman Mian Muhammad Riaz said in a statement that the wheat quota for flour mills had been reduced on the directions of the Federal Food Committee, which was expected to result in flour shortage in the market during the next few days.

A crisis loomed large because the wheat supply to flour mills had been cut towards the end of the month, overlooking the fact that in the beginning of every month the demand for ‘atta’ shot up, they said.

They said the government should expedite the delivery of imported wheat to the provinces for maintaining a balance between demand and supply for avoiding the recurrence of flour crisis.

The association would not be responsible for the crisis on account of reduction in wheat quota for mills, they added.
