THATTA, Feb 17: A primary school teacher, who was to serve as assistant presiding officer at the Arbab Bhai Khan polling station, was shot dead and two people were injured when a constable opened fire on them in Makli on Sunday.

Witnesses said that a bus taking polling staff to a remote polling station was at a petrol pump for refueling when the constable in uniform and carrying an official rifle, boarded it and asked the occupants to allow him to travel up to the Jherruk police station. As the bus started moving, he pointed his gun on the teachers.

Pir Bux Brohi and two of his colleagues jumped out of the bus in panic to save their lives, but the policeman allegedly opened fire, killing Brohi on the spot and injuring Ghulam Rasool Jokhio, another primary teacher, and one Ali Nawaz Bahrani.

The condition of Ghulam Rasool Jokhio was stated to be serious and he was shifted to Karachi.

As the news of the murder spread, teachers staged a sit-in at the DRO office, where election staff, mostly teachers, were collecting election material.
