Lawyers give new govt March 7 deadline for restoring judges

By Our Reporter

LAHORE, Feb 17: The president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Mr Aitzaz Ahsan, has given the next government till March 7 to restore the deposed judges.

In a letter addressed to lawyers, Mr Ahsan said: “We will launch the judicial bus and take all (deposed) judges to Islamabad on March 9 if the parliament did not restore the unlawfully removed judges.”

The letter was handed over to the media by SCBA’s secretary Amin Javed Bhatti at a press conference at Aitzaz’s residence here on Sunday.

“We have no institutions, no international respect and no democratic rights. But, still we have decided to give to the post-election government time to issue a direction to the police to facilitate the judges of November 2, 2007, to perform their functions and duties of office,” the letter said.

“Note down March 9 as the day when we take all our judges to Islamabad. Come with us. Just like in the previous round, I guarantee to you our absolute victory this time also. And it would be your victory. Our nation’s victory. A well deserved victory,” the letter said. Mr Ahsan said if the next government came up with the resolve to restore the judges in the interest of an independent judiciary, lawyers would strengthen its hands.
