‘Odorant added to gas’

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Feb 11: The Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) said on Monday that it had added 11,260 pounds of odorant oil to its gas network during January 2008.

In a press release, the company said its health safety environment department had also carried out an inspection in the third week of January, which adequately proved that a quantity of odorant oil was found in the odorant tank. It said that “we confirm if any official of SNGPL has given information regarding non-inclusion of odorant oil, he was not aware of the factual position”.

Note: The Dawn report was based on information provided by SNGPL officials to police, which suggested the odorant oil was found to be only 2.0 per cent, much less than the prescribed ratio of about 100 per cent.

A further inquiry as recommended by police would determine what quantities of odorant oil were required and how much imports have taken place. Any consumer in the SNGPL system could also confirm that the natural gas now lacked the usual smell.
