Great expectations from Baker View at LRC today

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Feb 9: The well-bred four-year-old colt Baker View, last year’s winner of two races in a row, will be on the track to add another win to his career tally in the feature event during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

The Murree Plate, a class IV Division I, II and III combined handicap race to be gone over the 1,400 metres distance will be his first this year after the Aug 26 and Sept 9 wins.

There are three contenders to choose from in the field of 10 runners, barring last-minute withdrawals. A couple of them have run well recently, however on paper there is nothing really outstanding in their performance like that of Baker View. The only negative point against him is that he will be running after a gap of over four months.

Baker View is from Baker’s Gate out-of-Love Charm, and should prove his bloodline’s worth over a longer strip. His future greatness, however, will be indicated by his performance on Sunday. Harry Can View, Valenday and Bold Act are prominent among his rivals.

The other important race of the day is the Clifton Plate, a term race for three-year-old colts and fillies to go over the distance 1,200 metres. Three out of the 10 runners for the field are names to be reckoned with. They are Melody Queen, My Delilah and Princess Ginza.

The dark bay filly Melody Queen from Cry For The Crown out-of-Miss Yalgar, who ran second to Amaan in the Sialkot Plate in the over 1,100 metres distance, might shake off her previous second finish.

The trio of Run And Win, Lucky Cat and Empire Maker is worthy of mention in the fifth race, the Mirpur Plate Class V Division I in the over 1,400 metres distance category.

Lucky Cat, a filly improving on speed, should have a slight advantage over the rest.

Four-year-old dark bay filly Baker Love, who is yet to come out of the maiden’s crest, looks a cut above in class as compared to the bloodline capabilities to win the second race. This distance goes out rightly in her favour as she is bred to stay appreciably over a longer strip. Tallal The Great and Rough Tough should be fighting for places too.

Judging on performance and track work, the seventh and last race looks more like a two-horse contest between Legend Sattar and Munsaf, the real contenders in a field of 11 runners.

They should prove their worth followed by Aaja Bulbul, who is yet to prove herself.

A card of seven races awaits the race goers to see the corps of the country’s breeding, the brilliance and the potential of the three and four-year-old colts and fillies.

Six events will be contested in the over 1,400 metres distance and one will be gone in the over 1,200 metres category. The first race will be held at 12.00noon.
