KARACHI, Feb 9: The Gymkhana race meeting is set to resume at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday after a month’s layoff pertaining to Moharram and the spread of equine influenza.

The last meeting was held on January 9.

The period witnessed an outbreak of equine influenza, a disease common among horses, resulting in the death of three-year-old bay colt Kitli Wala and confining others to their stables.

As many as 78 horses are among the acceptors barring last minute withdrawals, who will vie for the honours in seven races all to be run through four-and-a-half lengths. The first race begins at 1.00pm.

Making predictions in the present scenario seems to be a difficult task as it will be a first test for the participants after their recovery.

Four-year-old dark bay filly Bacaradi starts as our day’s best. Her track record suggests that she will make it two-in-a-row by overcoming the opposition in a field of 12 aspirants.

Another filly Be Jamalo, mare Sonia and filly NYX will be there to pose her challenge in the fourth race of the day.

Seven-year-old mare Afroze Jehan who kicked-off the new year with a facile seven lengths victory under rider M. Waseem II, is poised to make it two on the trot should she claim the feature event, the seventh and last race of the programme.

Her likely challengers are mare The Princess Arab, and filly Sugar Sweet. Chestnut Terrorist, if tried, can surprise the pundits.

If all goes well, five-year-old bay mare Lady Conqueror should land the sixth race which is also the supporting event.

The 12-year-old mare Taneez, six-year-old bay Baap Re Baap and 10-year-old mare Moment To Moment II looks fancy in the first three races while colt Reyan The Great has the ability to reign supreme in the fifth.
