DADU, Feb 8: Two people were killed and nine others, including two journalists, were injured in election-related violence in Sindh on Friday.

Karim Ali Jatoi, son of PML-Q candidate for NA-232 Dadu-II Liaquat Ali Jatoi, was going home, escorted by guards and a police contingent, after attending a wedding ceremony when they were confronted by a group of PPP workers who raised slogans against Liaquat Jatoi and other PML-Q leaders.

Karim’s guards allegedly attacked the PPP workers and opened fire, causing injuries to a TV journalist, a newspaper reporter and another person.

As the news of the clash spread, shopkeepers in the town closed their shops and hundreds of people, accompanied by PPP workers, came out and staged a demonstration outside the residence of Mr Liaquat Jatoi. An exchange of fire is reported to have taken place between workers of the two parties. Police fired tear gas shells. PPP worker Shahjehan was killed and two people were injured.

In the exchange of fire, PPP workers took Shahjehan’s body and the injured to the Civil Hospital in Dadu.

There was tension in the town and reports of gunfire were received from various areas.

Zulfikar Memon adds from Nawabshah: A man was killed and four other people were seriously injured in a clash between PPP and PML-Q workers in the Mir Khan Leghari village near Sakrand on Friday. Rangers were called to restore calm.

Abdul Rasheed Leghari, 28, was killed and his brother Ghulam Shah Leghari and two other people were injured. All the injured were taken to the Nawabshah Medical College Hospital.

Talking to reporters, Ghulam Shah accused PML-Q candidates for NA-214 and PS-27 and their supporters of firing on them in which his elder brother was killed and he was injured.
