LONDON, Feb 7: Former South African international Justin Kemp is to return to Kent after signing up to play for the English county this year and next.

Kemp, 30, who played four Tests and 85 one-dayers for South Africa, played for Kent previously in the 2005 and 2006 seasons. He recently announced his retirement from international cricket.

“I am really looking forward to playing for Kent again,” he said. “Rob Key and Graham Ford have built a really strong squad. These are exciting times and I am keen to make a real contribution to the success of the club.”

Graham Johnson, Kent’s Chairman of Cricket, added: “It’s great news for the Club that Justin has committed himself to Kent for the next two years.

“Kent members will remember some of his amazing innings when he was with us in 2005 and 2006 and will be delighted to hear of his return. His experience will be invaluable to our younger players and his all-round talents and approach will significantly strengthen our squad.”

Kent, meanwhile, received confirmation that Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood has been granted British Citizenship, ensuring he will not count as an overseas player for the upcoming season.

Azhar signed a two-year contract with the Twenty20 champions late last year after playing for Surrey last season.—AFP
