Senior umpires overlooked

LAHORE, Feb 6: While some elite umpires have been inducted to supervise the Pentangular Cup matches, a number of senior and deserving umpires have been ignored.

The 10-match event starts from Sunday.

International umpires like Aleem Dar, Asad Rauf, Nadeem Ghauri and Zameer Haider will be available to supervise the matches. However, seasoned umpires like Mian Aslam, Shakeel Khan, Iqbal Butt and Iftikhar Malik have been overlooked. Some new adjudicators like Ahsan Raza and Ahmed Shahab, however, will be officiating in the tournament.

“Only those umpires have been appointed who have shown good performances and as youngsters are also doing better,” Director Cricket Operations Zakir Khan said when asked about the omission of senior umpires.

Mian Aslam is one of the most experienced umpires, having supervised the World Cup games besides remaining on the list of the ICC’s panel of umpires.

Similarly, Iftikhar and Shakeel have also performed duties in international matches. But the PCB’s attitude towards the senior umpires, nearing retirement, is discouraging.
