JI opposes changes in NWFP, Fata

By Ahmed Hassan

ISLAMABAD, Feb 1: Deputy chief of Jamaat-i-Islami Senator Prof Khurshid Ahmed has criticised Governor Owais Ahmad Ghani’s statement that the government was considering changes in the administrative system of the NWFP and Fata.

In a statement issued here on Friday, he asked people to take notice of the statement and not to allow the caretakers to take any ‘drastic’ step.

He said the caretaker government had no authority to make such changes because this was the role of elected representatives of the people.

“Any such move by the federal government or the governor, who represents the federal government, will have serious consequences for the federation and its relationship with the province,” he said.

He observed that the statement appeared to be aimed at confusing the people and creating controversies.

“Pervez Musharraf, who has lost all legitimacy, should resign and a neutral caretaker government based on national consensus must be formed immediately so that free, fair and transparent elections can be held under a new constitutional Election Commission appointed through consultation and consensus of all parties,” he said.
