KARACHI, Jan 31: Police prevented on Thursday former acting chief justice of Pakistan, Justice Rana Bhagwandas, from leaving for Islamabad to attend a function in connection with the Justice Iftikhar Day, family sources said.

They said a contingent of police along with area SHO and DSP intercepted the the retired judge as he came out of his Clifton residence at around 3:30pm to catch a capital-bound flight, and they told him that he could not leave his residence till further orders, the sources said.

Clifton police chief Asif Aijaz Shaikh, however, said no such incident had occurred. “There is no police presence outside his residence,” he added.

Mr Bhagwandas was put under unofficial house arrest earlier on Jan 12. However, police had denied the report and claimed that only “additional security” had been provided to him. Later, on Jan 16, the police withdrew the “additional security”.—Staff Reporter
