Law and order for elections discussed

By Ihtashamul Haque

ISLAMABAD, Jan 30: Caretaker Prime Minister Mohammedmian Soomro met President Pervez Musharraf here on Wednesday and discussed with him the prevailing law and order situation with particular reference to the February 18 elections.

The president informed the prime minister about his recent visit to a number of European countries and his meetings with leaders of Belgium, Switzerland, France and the UK and World Economic Forum which he attended in Davos.

Presidential spokesman Maj-Gen (retd) Rashid Qureshi told Dawn that the president’s visit to the four European countries, he said, would go a long way in strengthening Pakistan’s political and economic relations with them.

He said the president informed the prime minister that his visit would yield enormous economic benefits in terms of increased trade and economic cooperation with 27-member European bloc.

The president said that the upsurge in the Pakistani economy over the past five years had been widely appreciated.

The spokesman said foreign investors in Davos had assured the president that they would continue investing in Pakistan. He said the president informed the prime minister that there had been 14 per cent increase in the foreign direct investment over the past two months.
