KARACHI, Jan 28: Pakistan boxers continued their pathetic show at the Olympic qualifying round in Bangkok when two more pugilists — Mohammad Ali and Dur Mohammad — crashed out of the tournament on Monday.

According to the information available here, bantamweight Ali, who had moved ahead after beating Lasa Silvester of Indonesia 23-7 in the first preliminary round, lost to Jipon Joan of Philippines while welterweight Dur Mohammad bowed against Horano of Japan.

Light-flyweight Abdul Waheed will face Uzbeskistan’s Rafirjon Sullonovo on Tuesday while light-heavyweight Ahmad Ali and heavyweight Yasir Jawaid have their bouts lined-up for Wednesday in quarterfinals.

Earlier, on Friday in the preliminary middleweight bout Pakistan’s Muqaddar Abbas had to be hospitalised after he broke his jaw in the second round against Iran’s Karkardi Hassan. Interestingly, he was actually announced as a heavyweight for the event by the Pakistan Boxing Federation.

On Saturday, flyweight Nauman Karim also lost to Liu Shih-Jung 27-5, while his team-mate featherweight Abid Ali lost to South Korea’s Ju Min Jae when referee stopped the contest as the Pakistani was outclassed in the third round.

Light-flyweight Abdul Waheed beat Vongpak Houne of Laos on points and lightweight Mohammad Sajid lost to India’s Prasad Deakar on points. Star Pakistani boxer Asghar Ali Shah also lost to Madaminov of Kyrgyzstan on points the same day.

The contest is being participated in by 28 countries and 19 boxers will qualify for the August’s Olympic Games in Beijing.—Sports Reporter
