ISLAMABAD, Jan 27: A spokesman for the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has said that the conduct of elections in accordance with the Constitution is the sole responsibility of the Election Commission and the army will not be involved in the process.
However, he said, the army would be available for maintaining law and order during the elections, along with other law-enforcement agencies.
It may be mentioned that the army had been supervising elections in the past, but this time it appears it does not want to get involved in view of the political situation in the country.
Observers have noted that the new army chief, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, had recently directed army personnel to keep away from politics and said that army’s role in the coming elections would be restricted to maintaining the law and order.
