HYDERABAD, Jan 26: The general secretary of the Sindh Chamber of Agriculture (SCA) Akhund Ghulam Mohammad Siddiqui warned on Saturday that if the mill owners refused to buy sugarcane at the agreed rate the growers would be compelled to stop them supply of their produce and put locks on the mills.
He said at a meeting of the chamber that the government appeared completely helpless before mill owners and failed to convince them to purchase cane at Rs63 per 40 kg as agreed between the mill owners, the government and the growers.
He said that recently a meeting was held at the Chief Minister’s House in Karachi between the growers and PSMA in which it was agreed by the mill owners that they would pay Rs63 per 40 kg of sugarcane.
He said that the government had also issued a notification to this effect but the mill owners were violating both the agreement and the notification.
He charged that the mill owners were blackmailing the growers through their brokers who were purchasing sugarcane at Rs55 to Rs57 per 40 kg.
He said it was unacceptable and warned that if the mill owners did not act upon government notification and continued to violate the agreement the growers would be forced to stop them supply of sugarcane and put locks on the mills.
Agha Nasrullah, Dr Shahnawaz Shah, Mohammad Khan Sarejo and Mir Imdad Talpur were among those who attended the meeting.
DEMO: A large number of students of Sindh and Mehran universities belonging to SPSF-SB staged a demonstration and a sit-in outside the press club on Saturday, seeking withdrawal of what they termed a fake case against their leaders.
Party leaders Mohammad Ali Mir Jatt, Mohammad Mussa Khoso and Faisal Arain alleged that Medical Superintendent of Liaquat University Hospital (Civil Hospital) Dr Waseem Shaikh had filed a fake case against their leaders to hide the hospital’s negligence in saving Comrade Raja Khemchand Khemchand’s life. He died in the hospital.
They demanded that the government withdraw the case and order registration of an FIR against the MS for negligence, which led to the death of Khemchand.
They warned that if their demands were not accepted, they would launch a province-wide protest movement against the MS.

Hesco property: Hesco Chief Executive Chaudhry Guftar Anjum here on Saturday directed the property manager of the company to update information on all the properties of the company and submit a report along with proprietary rights and legal documents as soon as possible. He issued these directives during a meeting with the property manager.
He further directed that action should be taken against all those people, who had encroached upon the company’s property and construct boundary walls.
He said that the property cases pending in courts and Sindh revenue department should be got disposed of with the help of director legal and labour and proceedings against the Qabza group should be instituted.
The chief executive also met representatives of private power generation companies including Fateh Textile group, Ismail industry and Safe Hire Industry.
The delegation discussed the issue of power generation and its sale to Hesco. The members of the delegation said that within nine months of the signing of an agreement between the company and the private power generators, they will sell electricity to the company according to the rates fixed by Nepra.
